Why Won’t My Dog Sleep During The Night

Dogs are people too! We have heard that before and you might not realize how true it can be. As a new dog owner, you might need to know that you have to do more then feed, water and pet your dog.

We humans forget that we can not treat our dogs like people, as most of the time this is what is causing our problems with our dogs. We get a new puppy; they are so cute so we let them sleep with us like a baby. This creates the first of many problems.

The trouble begins as owners try and put their dog out of the bed and the room. They bark, they roam the house whining or scratching at the door and now you’ve created a monster. Before you know it, no one in the house is sleeping so now what do you do?

Sometimes these dogs that bark continuously when they are not with you are suffering from separation anxiety. One easy solution is to put the dog’s bed in the room with you or a family member. Moving the dog’s bed or crate into a room where he is sleeping with a family member should fix the problem.

Many dog trainers are big fans of crating your dog. From the get go, keeping your dog in a crate for sleeping or when you are away will give them a sense of security. Don’t feel bad when you crate your dog, you are really doing them a favor.

If you have room and can provide a good home for another dog, some pet owner’s opt to get a friend for their restless pups. Adoption is always a good thing when you can provide a great home for an abandoned dog. The dogs will tire themselves out playing during the day and help everyone sleep at night.

Exercise is a key part of a dog’s day and should not be avoided even if they have a yard to run in. Walking the dogs for about 30 minutes and give them some socialization which they enjoy, just as we do. Hyper dogs really do need to be worn out and playing with them in the park is a good way to do this.

As pet owners we need to be responsible for taking out dogs out for walks. Just because there is a yard for them to run free does not mean they are getting exercise. Running with your dogs or playing with them in a park or the yard is a good way to get them tired enough to sleep at night!

Younger more active dogs are in definite need of exercising. As dogs get older, they will slow down but you still need to take them out for walks and socialization. Being a responsible pet owner will provide your dog with a happy and healthy life and afford you a good night’s sleep!

Once again, good article. Owners should realize also that when their pet gets into their “golden years”, joint pain does become a serious issue. Proper diet and exercise will help slow this progressive disease down.
