Rarely do people think about who will take care of their pets if they could no longer do so. Although agonizing to consider this possibility, by making a plan now, you can alleviate the stress and strain down the road.

The first step in choosing a place to board your dog is thinking about what kind of care you want him to receive. Does he spend a lot of time outdoors, or is he an inside pet? Is he a fussy eater or have certain dietary or healthcare needs? Must he have his special blanket, toy and treat to be happy (or at least you think so)?

After you have thought through all of the nuances of your pet’s life, you can start looking for his caregiver.

Ask with your pet’s doctor first. Vets may offer a boarding service. You also should consider the amount of attention your pet will have, wherever you wind of leaving him or her. Another thing to consider in a veterinarian clinic is that your pet will be surrounded by other sick or hurt animals, which may not be the most nurturing environment for a healthy animal.

If you still feel uncomfortable, don’t do it. An internet search for dog boarding in your city will likely yield several results of both yellow page listings and websites. Www.dogboarding.com is a good place to begin.

It also pays to ask the kennel staff to describe an average day at their facility. If possible, arrange to visit the kennel to see if it is as described. You might also want to take your dog to see how he reacts to the staff or other dogs there. Arrange for your dog to spend a day or weekend there. This is a handy test if you have a long vacation planned in your near future since it lets your pet know that this separation is not permanent and you will be back. Don’t limit yourself to one kennel. You can try this test with a few places before you decide on the best facility to board your pet.

In order to keep your peace of mind, planning ahead is recommended At some point down the road, if an emergency should occur, this is one less decision you will have to make.
