I have a family member who owns a lab with knee problems and they give him glucosomine. He's also on a diet so there is less weight on it.

My husky puppy ws recently diagnosed with HD. She was only 8 months when we found out. She was getting very hyper so I had increased her exercise. I first thought that I had went overboard and she was sore since she was limping a little. But after 2 weeks of meds and no imporvement we had x-rays done to be safe. I was shocked when they said she has hip dysplasia. She is now doing much better but doesn't go running with me anymore.

If they have it bad enough the signs show up at 12 weeks or so. Maybe holding a leg funny when they run or crying if you accidentally push their hips to sit. Some dogs can go through life with no signs if the hips aren't bad. The only way to know is with a x ray from the vets and have an OFA reading done.

signs can show at any age.. as young as 6 months.. or not until 5-7 years of age or later.. just depends on how bad the dog's hips are.

You can have her hips screened and do a preliminary exam to help determine if she may have HD, but you would have to wait until she is 2 years of age for more accurate results.

We had a lab mix with HD, he started limping off and on when he was around 5 years old, thats when he was diagnosed.

This was also a concern when we got a our husky, as they are also prone to it, and was told that symptoms would be detected within the first 2 years.

There will be signs, maybe not physical, but with an xray by the age of 2 years.
