What to give your Dog with Hip dysplasia?

My dog is 10yrs old, he’s a Golden Retriever and has Hip dysplasia. Is there something we could give the dog to help with pain or improve the way he moves? Thanking you all in advance.

Honestly I wouldnt recommend giving your dog anything without the go ahead from your vet. Visit your vet and explain to him that your dog seems to be in pain or is uncomfortable, see what he can do for your dog. But you yourself can give your dog massages/rub downs to ease the pain and stiffness in his joints. You can also look into getting him a special dog bed that will give him a lil extra comfort! Good luck,

Hip dysplasia is the biggest problem for large breeds in the US. As far as I remember from our own experience there is nothing much to do except make the dog comfortable. Massage is a good idea but make sure that someone shows you how. Otherwise you could hurt him.

But if you ever get another large or giant breed, make sure and feed it the right food. Big name commercial foods have the equivalent in them of what we call “enriched” in human food and it’s not good for them because it makes them grow faster than nature intended.

If it makes you feel a little better our Komondor developed the problem in his first year and he never sat on his butt like most dogs. Too painful.

The Vet has meds for dogs with Hip Displasia that helps with the pain & inflammation when not too severe, some do have surgery performed ( hip joint replacemnts, etc ) ..very expensive ( $1,000′s) it helps but am not sure it cures, eventually many put their dogs down so they don’t suffer, it gets very, very painful for the dog & those who love them !! Unfortunately hip problems are common in these kinds of dogs, labs… purebreds, etc due to being over bred :( Dogs ( NEVER Cats ) can have baby aspirin – best & safest, one or 2 every 12 hours for a retriever @ most, but if you get or have vet meds do not use the aspirin without talking to your vet. Sorry to hear about the hip displasia, he won’t play like he used too probably & shouldn’t any way :) Take Care
