If you are like most other pet owners, you feel that your dog is a member of your family. He is completely loyal and keeps you company without asking for much. You’ll want your dog to stay around for as long as possible, so keeping him healthy is important.

The one thing most people forget about in taking care of their dogs is that their teeth also need to be taken care of. Wild dogs take care of their teeth by chewing on raw bone; the bone scrapes the plaque and helps remove bits of meat stuck in between the teeth.

You need to remember that your dog isn’t like a wild animal – he needs your help from the bacteria that causes bad breath and other problems. Your dog generally eats soft canned food or small chunks of the hard food, so these aren’t going to provide him much for natural teeth care like the raw bones that wild dogs chew on.

If you care about your dog, you really need to help him keep his teeth clean. One of the easiest things you can do is to provide raw bones for them to chew on a few times a week.

You don’t necessarily need to buy a bone from the grocery store – a rawhide bone from the pet store is great. Chewing on the bone will scrape off the plaque from the teeth, and loosen any bit of meat stuck in between them.

If the bone isn’t working, or if they just aren’t interested in chewing on bones, then you should take his mouth care into your own hands and brush them with toothpaste. Use a toothbrush different than your own.

You can easily find toothbrushes and toothpaste for your dog at the pet store.

Brushing them daily is preferred, but if it’s not feasible, then brush them at least 3-4 times weekly.

Scrub teeth and gum to increase circulation in the gums. Get rid of any food that gets stuck in his teeth. You should also opt for dry food instead than soft food to keep your dog’s teeth cleaner.

It doesn’t clean teeth completely, but it does help some. You can also give your dog biscuits, since they are hard and they remove plaque.

Have the vet inspect his mouth and teeth every time you take your dog in for a checkup. Your vet can talk to you about the best way to keep your dog’s teeth healthy.

Preventive care is better than having to fix your dog’s teeth if they get really bad. Help your friend live a long, healthy life and make sure you don’t forget his teeth.
