Preventing Canine Dental Disease
Preventing dental disease in dogs is important, and prevention must be started at an early age by dog owners. Dental disease is given priority in the health schedule of the dog nowadays because of the association of dental issues with other systemic diseases in dogs.
Antibiotics need to be given in the initial stage of tooth infection. If not, this may cause more acute infections and bacteria may spread to other nearby regions like the oral mucous membrane and pharyngeal region etc.
Providing chew toys at an early age can help in the proper development of their dental structures. There are also a wide variety of bones and rawhide along with healthy snacks that can be given to dogs when they are pups that will also aid in the development of strong and healthy teeth. Given at an early age this can also be a deterrent to certain breeds that are more prone to biting of nipping.
If there is any evidence of bleeding from the oral region, the dog needs to be examined thoroughly for any dental abnormality. Mainly puppies but sometimes adult dogs also may have tooth injuries. They need to be tended to immediately as a preventive step. If not, the animal may end up with secondary bacterial infections.
Hunting dogs need additional care associated with the dental structure and such care is needed to avoid future dental problems. Brushes are available to provide better dental care to dogs. However, one has to allot more time and should have patience to use these brushes. The Centers for Disease Control and prevention are trying to put up guidelines to prevent dental diseases in dogs in many nations. However, oral examination needs to be carried out frequently in dogs to help rule out the emerging problems pertaining to their dental structures.
