It lasts three to six weeks even with antibiotic treatment. There are now vets using tamiflu for it. It works well if given when the disease first attacks, but not late in the disease. You might remember that for future reference.

Kennel cough his a virus. Viruses can take a while to subside and -just like with human viruses- they need to 'run their course'. Unfortunately, there are no medications out there that will cure a virus (human and dog).

The reason why antibiotics are prescribed for kennel cough is to attack the bacteria that attaches itself to the dog's trachea in a kennel cough positive dog. Once the bacteria is killed off, the dog has a faster recovery.

I would recommend making a phone call to your veterinarian to give them on update on his situation. Your vet may or may not prescribe a second round of antibiotics. Either way, it is advised to call your veterinarian since kennel cough can develop into pneumonia.

Take him back to the vet and make sure that the neighbor dog is getting treated to because it is possible for him to get it again.

4 weeks is a little long. I would definitely take him in again for safety reasons and as a precaution. We had a dog with kennel cough and it only lasted about two weeks. I would be careful about any home remedies because overall your vet is going to know the seriousness of the situation and be able to tell you the best thing for him at this particular time. Good luck I am sorry he is sick. I had a boxer and they are such loveable dogs I hope he gets well soon!

Its not unlikely for them to have the cough still. I would consider taking him back to the vet though. I'm a vet tech and sometimes they have to be put on 2 courses of antibiotics. Did the vet tell you that you could use Robitussin dm? Ask about it. Also consider getting the bordatella vaccine for prevention of kennel cough.

Kennel cough is like the common cold to us so sometimes it lasts for a long time, sometimes it just goes away. Call your vet back he may have a home style remedy. I hope your dogs feeling better soon!

I got a puppy who had kennel cough. It too him a while to get over it. He probably just needs more time. Call your vet and ask them if your still concerned
