How To Properly Bathe A Dog
Bathing a dog needs to be done with care. This is because if you are careless in bathing, the animal may end up with various infections. For example, if you don’t close the ears with a large cotton ball, water and soap may enter the ear canals and may cause an ear infection. Signs of an infection would include constant discharge from the ears and shaking of the head.
Frequency of bathing actually depends on the breed of the dog. If your dog has a heavy coat like the Cocker Spaniel, or a Golden Retriever then bathing should be carried out about every four to six weeks. If these breeds are bathed too frequently, the skin and coat lose the protective characters. Conversely shorter hair breeds may be able to go a little longer between baths. Of course if your pup “gets into anything” you should always be quick in cleaning them up.
Take care in avoiding irritant soaps or human soaps. Soaps used for human beings are not suitable for dogs. Similarly, many human shampoo products have some ingredients that are not suitable in the proportions that are to be used on dogs. Hence, always try to use the shampoo products that are mentioned onnly for use on dogs.
Always leave enough time and patience for a proper bath. Most dogs actually enjoy the process and will get more and more used to it over time. Many dogs will run around crazily after you dry them off and this is a fun time for both owner and their pup. Whether using a bathtub or a hose in he back yard, have everything in one place before you start bathing your dog. Try to have a leash, conditioner, towel, and shampoo in the bath place.
Conditioner is helpful to make combing and grooming activities easier later. Brushing and grooming your dog helps to keep their coat healthy. Bathing should be a convenient activity to both the dog and the owner. This should not be a burden for either.
