We are purchasing a Newfoundland, and where we are getting it from the breeder has another Newfie with elbow dysplasia and a grade 2 heart murmur. She’s selling the second dog for only a hundred dollars. I am curious as to how crippling the elbow dysplasia is for the dog, especially a dog the size of a Newfoundland. Keep in mind I have a four year old son who will get very attached to the dog (both of them) and will be extremely heartbroken if something bad happens to the dog.

My brother has a lab with that, and he doesn’t walk on his feet anymore; he gets around on his elbows. He is old though, 14. A newfoundland is an awesome dog, but really big, and the dysplasia could affect him worse because is is so big. Whatever you do, good luck. Caring for a pet who is ill can be heartbreaking, but it can also be one of the most fulfilling things you can ever do. They need you.

Are the 2 dogs from the same litter? Dysplasia has a genetic link so it the dogs aren’t related you should be ok. If they are related you may need to get your checked out before buying it that way you will know if it has the problem or not; most likely worthwhile as putting it right is an orthopaedic surgery that will cost a bit.
