I’m curious as to how much and what type of care a 1.5 year old GSD with hip dysplasia (already had surgery on one side) and a luxated patella (already corrected w/ surgery) would require. He’s up for adoption and I really like his personality and am seriously considering it, but I really want to know what I’m getting into before I make that type of commitment.

The surgery can fail at any time and can be quite costly to repair. You will have a fairly active breed of dog that is still quite young, and yet you will have to moniter its activities and hold him back from too much activity against his wishes. You will need to be extra vigilant with diet and exercise, as obesity will further trouble his joints, yet you can’t give him the exercise a normal GSD will require.
However, you will be giving a loving home to a good dog with a poor start in life thanks to poor breeding practices. Hats off to you.

you cant have him in strenuous activity. keep it easy and dont wear him out. <3

If he ever needed surgery again, you’d be looking at at least $1000. For now, he should be on joint supplements and pain medication if necessary. Cost all together probably $70-$100 per month.
