We have a one year old Bernese Mountain Dog with Elbow Dysplasia. He underwent surgery in August when he turned a year old. Although they took out all the bone chips, he is still limping. Have you had any experience with a dog with elbow dysplasia? Did you have your dog undergo surgery? Did it work? How long did it take? How was the rest of the dogs life?
His parents were OFA certified. He already had the surgery so we understand what was wrong with him.

IMO – I’d say if he’s having surgery at 1 year of age then he’s not going to have that great of a life. If he’s still in a good mood, playful and engaging with you and your family – but has to be on pain meds for the ED – he’s fine.
    If he’s not…consider what’s best for him.

Did you get him from a reputable breeder that did OFA certs on parents? Did he come with a guarantee – if he came from a good breeder he should still be covered and they may pay part of the medical costs?

Elbow Dysplasia: Similar to hip dysplasia, this is also a degenerative disease common to large-breed dogs. It’s believed to be caused by abnormal growth and development, which results in a malformed and weakened joint. The disease varies in severity: the dog could simply develop arthritis, or he could become lame. Treatment includes surgery, weight management, medical management, and anti-inflammatory medication.

No health guarantee on the dog? The person you bought the dog from should pay the bill! NEVER,EVER buy a dog without a health guarantee!
