Most of the basic dog health care issues are common sense when it comes to dogs. It is really mind boggling that many owners do not provide the most basic of health care to their dogs. While we understand that taking a dog to the vet for regular checkups can be expensive, the flip side to that equation is that not doing so is unfair to your canine friend. If you are picking up a dog from the pound or the humane society you can be assured that your new friend has had all the latest shots, tests and vaccinations. These facilities generally will not let a dog go until they get the all clear signal health wise. Depending on the state or locality you may have to pay for that latest check-up so at least you know what you are getting yourself into.
If you find a stray it is a bit of a different story. Of course you can turn them over to the pound but many people end up keeping strays that they may find. If this is the case you really do need to find out if the pup is OK and get them a thorough health care test.
Common ailments found in strays include parasites, fleas, various types of worms, early stage rabies and various other potentially fatal issues. It is even more important to have this all checked out if you have another dog at home already.
