Diarrhea In Dogs
Diarrhea in dogs is a common occurrence. Though diarrhea and dogs is not always threatening to their health, owners should know when to consult their veterinarian.
Eating something that upset their stomachs such as something from the trash, maybe a viral or bacterial illness, or a digestive intolerance to something in your dog’s food, can cause them to have diarrhea. The diarrhea is often the body’s way of expelling toxins from the body.
If there is blood in the diarrhea or the diarrhea lasts for more than a day or two, your dog needs to be seen by a veterinarian. Your dog should be taken to the veterinarian immediately if you suspect that he or she may have ingested poison.
It is a veterinarian emergency if your dog is struggling to breathe. If weight loss occurs or your dog doesn’t seem to be able to relax or lie still, you should have your dog examined by your vet as soon as possible.
If it is a puppy that has not had all of its vaccinations, he or she should be examined by a veterinarian even if diarrhea tends to go away rather quickly. A common cause for diarrhea in puppies is intestinal parasites.
When your dog first experiences diarrhea, you should remove his or her food and water. By restricting food and water intake, you allow your pets digestive system to settle down.
If the diarrhea has gone away, you may begin to feed your dog bland foods such as a mixture of one third lean, cooked meat and two thirds cooked rice. Two options for the meat can be a chicken breast or a hamburger that has been patted with paper towels to remove excess fat and grease.
Some owners add two or three tablespoons of plain yogurt to soothe the stomach and help replenish healthy bacteria. The bland dog food diet should be followed for a few days until all is well.
