Dealing With Dog Aggression

If you are the owner of an aggressive Dog or have been the unfortunate victim of one you will be all to aware of the serious danger posed by aggressive Dog behavior.

The Facets Of Dog Aggression

It is key to appreciate the difference between a Dog showing aggressive behavior towards another Animal and a Human Being. These different types of aggression are uniquely triggered.

*Aggression Based On Fear: Once a Dog experiences an overwhelmingly traumatic experience, they can often react with aggressive behavior if ever put in a similar situation again. For example, if a Dog has been bitten by another Dog, they may become nervous around others and react with barking, chasing or other aggressive displays such as snarling or even biting.

*Aggression Based On Dominance: If Dog aggression takes the form of barking, snarling or biting towards humans – especially towards the owners, then it is a likely case of Aggression based dominance. This comes about when Dogs have either been poorly trained or are feeling the need to assert their dominance over you. It is very important that you quickly assert your own authority in these situations by asserting yourself as the ‘Alpha Dog.’ There are many home based training guides available on the internet to assist you with this.

What To Do If Aggression Has Just Recently Started

When a Dog changes from being well mannered to showing sign of aggression it is incredibly disturbing for the owners. This is usually down to a distressing recent situation that may have affected the animal emotionally or even a medical reason where Dog aggression is merely an outward physical symptom of a wider health related issue.

Emotion Based Dog Aggression

When we say emotional reasons we are talking about major incidents that may have happened in your Dogs life that could have a lasting negative effect on their behavior. There are a multitude of reasons. Ranging from a severe change of routine to a new arrival in the home: Taking routine as an example, if you would usually be at home all day with your pet and then have to start full time work and somebody else is looking after your Dog this may cause your Dog to suffer from Separation Anxiety. A fear based on their perception that you may never return. Or maybe there was an incident involving another Dog such as a fight or persistent aggression towards them when meeting in Public such as a park or during their daily walk. Whatever the situation, if the reasons are emotional, then you will need to provide your Dog with reassurance that they remain in your favor. Pet them and encourage good behavior by using a gentle and praising tone of voice as soon as you witness them doing something good.

Medical Illness Leading To Aggression

In terms of medical factors, which contribute to Dog aggression, there are over 4 dozen different conditions that can result in behavioral aggression as a kind of outward symptom. A visit to the Vet for a full medical check up is advised for your Dog at the earliest opportunity to see if this is the case.
