You should contact the breeder you purchased him from as well to let him know of the condition. A reputable breeder would take back a pet that has severe ailments like this, and would not continue to breed dogs that produce litters with this kind of problem. HD tests are normally done around 12-18 months for dog that size, since their bones are still forming until then, but a diagnosis for a larger breed dog isn't normally until 2 years of age, and after the growth plates have fused. I rescued a German Shepherd Dog, who I later found out had HD in his left hip (he's 3). If the condition is as bad as you state, the only thing that's going to help is surgery, since HD is a malformation of the femur head and/or the hip socket, which you should have seen on the radiograph images for the diagnosis (and the results of the "flexion" test). There is also a good chance this is going to get worse as the dog continues to grow. Sirius' vet put him on: Rimadyl (one 100 mg 2x per day for pain) Torbutrol (one 10 mg tab twice a day for 6 days; a sedative to help him rest and encourage him not to use the leg) Cephalexin (two 500 mg tabs, twice a day; is an antibiotic) He still takes Rimadyl (one 100 mg tab) after his physical therapy or walks. The surgery he had was a resection, since he is young a hip replacement wasn't recommended. The total cost w/ medication, x-rays and the procedure itself was around $1200 here in central PA. He is around 90 lb, so that also plays a role in the cost, since it costs more for a larger dog to be put under than a smaller dog, as well as needing a higher dose of medication. The medication is strickly for pain and is NOT going to fix the problem. If I was you I would start saving for the surgery and maybe even ask the vet for a rough cost for when the dog is older (don't do it before 12 months since she's still growing). It works as well as Rimadyl but with fewer side effects. Metacam will only control the pain NOT fix the hips and it is not meant to be given over an extended amount of time. This is going to be a VERY hard road for you, with out surgery this poor pup could be crippled by his 5 th birthday! Surgery run about $1500 per hip in Texas (I dont know where you are)

In the future research your breeders better, ask if the parents have hip certifications, Visit at least 3 times before buying a pup. Always ask to see where the pups are kept (if they bring you into a “viewing room” this is a red flag). I am sorry your dog has HD. Edit: also my vet said to give it with food, and brush the dogs teeth well.
